Hillary Clinton: Republican Ally & McCain Surrogate

The McCain campaign’s secret weapon. Just call her Agent Orange, the Toxic Triangulator…

Hillary Clinton is Barack Obama’s worst enemy and she may well be John McCain’s best friend. “To some degree, Clinton is now seen in conservative circles as a temporary ally who ought not be thrown off stride,” writes Jonathan Martin on the influential blog site Politico.com.

Martin quotes Barbara Comstock, a former Republican National Committee research director and GOP strategist as joking, “She’s our best surrogate.” Certainly, Clinton’s vicious attacks against the Democratic frontrunner are playing into the hands of the Republicans, who are cheering the senator from New York for softening up Obama, considered by many the likely Democratic nominee. The McCain campaign obviously regards Obama as the likely nominee, Martin says, given that McCain’s commercials focus almost entirely on Obama and all but ignore Clinton.

If Obama does get the nomination but eventually loses to McCain, the Clinton campaign — and Bill and Hillary in particular — will deserve much of the responsibility.

    • You’re right on, Pauline.

And that’s why many — including Pat Buchanan — believe that Hillary actually is running for 2012, and she’s really hoping that McCain is elected over Obama in the 2008 genereral election.

This disregard for the Democratic Party is typical of the Clintons in pursuit of their own political power. Accordingly, it’s no mystery why superdelegate Joe Andrew — the former DNC chair appointed by Bill Clinton — switched his support yesterday from Hillary to Obama: the continued Clinton willingness to sacrifice the Democratic Party simply has gone over the line, and now even those previously loyal to the Clintons are saying enough is enough.

    • Oh my, another former DNC chairman, Paul Kirk, just declared himself as an Obama superdelegate, and Rick Klein from ABC news just whispered moments ago “that the Clintons long since worn out their welcome” within the Democratic Party. Are you listening, Hillary?

    • Oh please. Hillary was running for President in 2004 when she was really hoping for JOHN KERRY to lose. And lets at least all admit that Kerry, kind of a jerk.

This time, I really believe she wants the party to be unified. Oh sure, she ABSOLUTELY desires the win, and is obviously fighting tooth and nail for that. But from appearances, she and Obama got along just fine before they started competing with each other. Lets not forget that on paper, their policies are almost identical. It was only when Obama started to do all that “winning” stuff, that she thought negatively of him. :P (

    • Aaaarg!! Something’s wrong, and I can’t post my whole comment. It keeps cutting off. When it’s fixed, please let me know when to try again. :*( Also am I the only one who thinks that the anti-spam settings are set way too high? (They keep telling me I have the wrong anti-spam word, although I do my best to duplicate it)

    • A caveat about the youtube clip to which I linked below: there’s a debate as reported by Ben Smith on Politico as to whether it’s been doctored or not, and in all fairness I want to make sure that people are aware of this, and the director of the film the WarRoom offers an alternative explanation for the use of the word “sh*t”: http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0508/Pennebaker_Clip_Doctoered.html

    • Been away for awhile and see that the same tedious crappy columns written by the same tedious person is still poluting this site.

Well, there are at least two side effects. It will make me certain to stay away in the future and if “Pauline” is representative of MTF people, then my opinion and support is considerably lessened.

Thanks for being so counter-productive. I won’t be wasting my time in the future.

    • It is Obama who is the Republican surrogate. His idea that one can be nice to the Republicans and thereby they will just agree to what he wants is absurd. Should he be elected President, he will be rolled.

See the column by Paul Krugman in today’s NYTimes.

    • What a wonderful Friday afternoon! Liberals fighting over which Democrat is really a Republican! :-) A serious question: are you folk going to come together in the fall and vote for the eventual Democratic nominee? Or will you stay home, miffed your guy/gal didn’t get the prize? McCain and all the Republicans hoope you stay home.

      Sincerely,

      James
